About
“Wide-ranging gestural variety and clearly intended interpretative choices — a podium presence that creates ambience and a sense of occasion, encouraging players to excel and elevating the playing beyond mere rendition.”
— TSA Assessment Panel, British Army, March 2026
James Farthing is a conductor, composer, and British Army Bandmaster whose work spans military ceremonial, orchestral, wind band, and brass ensemble repertoire. He holds a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) with Distinction in Musical Direction from the ABRSM, and graduated from the British Army Bandmaster Course with the Coronation Class in 2024 — among the most rigorous professional conducting qualifications in the United Kingdom. His musical foundations were laid at Junior Trinity College of Music and Cardiff University, where he was recognised with the Chappell Prize for Composition, the Philip Jones Brass Award, and named an Aldeburgh Young Musician.
Since joining the British Army in 2014, Farthing has served as a trumpet player with The Band of The Parachute Regiment before completing the Bandmaster Course and being posted as Assistant Bandmaster to The Band and Bugles of The Rifles. His compositions have earned national recognition: Men at Arms won the Army Benevolent Fund's March Composition Competition and was adopted as the official march of the Army Benevolent Fund: The Soldiers' Charity. His ceremonial work Spectaculum Coronationis Regalis was composed to mark The King's Coronation in 2023. He has also appeared as guest conductor for Champion Section brass bands, including Andover Town Band.
Alongside his military career, Farthing serves as Director of Music with Watlington Concert Band and, since 2026, as Assistant Musical Director with the Petersfield Orchestra — building a growing catalogue of original works for wind and brass ensembles that spans marches, folk song suites, and ceremonial pieces.
